Description
Patch cord, or patch cable is an electrical or fiber-optic cable used to connect ("patch") one electronic or optical device to another for signal routing. Patch cords connect different types of devices, such as a switch connected to a computer or a switch connected to a router.
Patch cords are often manufactured in different colors to make them easier to distinguish. Types of patch cords include microphone cables, fiber optic spectrometer cables, headphone extension cables, XLR connectors, miniature telephone (TT) connectors, RCA connectors, 1/4-inch TRS phone connector cables (and modular Ethernet cables), and cables that support video and amplified signals including thick hose-like wires (snake cables) for transmission. However, patch cords usually refer only to short lengths of wire used in patch panels.
The term "patch" comes from its early use in telephone and broadcast studios, where spare equipment could be kept on standby and temporarily used to replace a failed device. This reconnection was accomplished with patch cords and patch panels, much like the field of jacks in a wired telephone switch. In addition, patching allows you to create temporary, makeshift connections between devices to meet unusual needs. Analog music synthesizers often use patch cords to interconnect oscillators, filters, and other functional parts.
