July 31, 2026, Fiber Optics Online News: According to Fierce, the U.S. Department of Energy has approved a $100 billion plan to transform an aging uranium enrichment plant in Padyuka, Kentucky, into a large new data center campus. This move aims to lead global AI innovation and develop the local economy.
Asset management firm and developer Brookfield, energy infrastructure company NextEra Energy, Big Rivers Power, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative, and Paducah Power System are all involved in the plan to transform the site into a 1.8GW data center campus for AI and high-performance computing workloads. As part of the Padyuka project, NextEra Energy will utilize natural gas to provide 2GW of new generating capacity and deploy up to 2.6GW of battery storage to support the new campus's operation. Work on the site is expected to be completed in 2031.
